Becoming Who We Know We can Become

David O. McKay said, “I have quoted often before, and shall again because I like it, in referring to the influence of an individual. There is one responsibility which no man can evade and that responsibility is personal influence. Man’s unconscious influence. The silent, subtle radiation of his personality. The effects of his words and acts. These are tremendous. Every moment of his life he is changing to a degree the life of the whole world. Every man has an atmosphere which is affecting every other. So silent and unconsciously is this influence working, that man may forget that it exists... This constant weakening or strengthening of others…. Life is a state of radiation and absorption. To exist is to radiate. To exist is to be the recipient of radiation” - David O. McKay, Mission of BYU, April 27, 1948

What is the subtle vibration and radiation that is permeating through us and from us? And what influence can you or I have in the world?

David O. McKay says that I not only matter, but my existence changes to a degree the life of the whole world. How is that possible?

Who Am I? What is my purpose? Have you ever wondered about those questions? I know I have. In fact at some times in my life I have felt it very deeply. I know I have purpose. But how do we find out what that purpose is?

Years ago, I remember attending a religious function for my church. I remember sitting there listening to the speaker as she ignited something inside me. I wanted to be like her. I went home and shared with my husband the great energy and thrill I felt as I listened to her speak. I knew I had it inside me to fulfill my passions and dreams. I knew I had potential, and that if I worked hard, I could become the person I desired in my heart. I prayed and asked God for help. I knew He could help me.

What are your goals? What are your dreams? Do you believe your dreams, passions and goals could be part of your purpose? I have found with my clients that most times, these feelings inside of us are God given. He wants us to become our best selves. He wants us to understand what we are capable of becoming.

When I was young, I loved playing softball. My dad was our coach. I remember so many nights practicing to throw that darn ball straight. Over time, I not only threw the ball straight, I became the pitcher. That was a big achievement in the 6th grade. My dad taught me that I could achieve anything I desired with hard work and effort.

What does this have to do with radiation? You are powerful! You are strong! You are independent! You can achieve your best self by working hard and achieving your dreams. That in turn radiates out and vibrates into the world giving other people permission to do the same. You are changing the world as you better yourself.

“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a Child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson.

I believe that we can change. Without change life would be hopeless and meaningless. Change is opportunity for growth and potential. We need to allow others and ourselves that possibility.

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Change is a powerful tool. The power is within us. Let us radiate love and light to the world.
