Getting to Know your "Root" | 7 Chakras in 7 Weeks

Here we go my friends, are you as excited as me for this final chakra of our 7 part series? The root chakra or coccygeal energy center, is located at the base of the spine, and spins downward between the legs. It is related to the quantity of physical energy that you have and your will to live in the physical realm. It is a tell all through either pain or comfort in the body. It deals with feelings regarding where you came from, your tribe/family, and how you identify with that origin. Those who were raised in exciting or unpredictable homes may suffer from back pain or leg pain as you age as a result of that environmental impact on your root chakra. Lower back, hip, tail bone pain, even sciatica or foot pain is all a sign that this center isn't functioning properly. If this is you, you may also realize that these pains seem to just come out of nowhere most of the time. This is because this center is what roots us to our physical body. You most likely aren't someone who is super in touch with what is going on with you on a physical level most of the time until it is staring you in the face. The imbalance in this area could be the result of trauma during your birth, insufficient bonding with your mother, or abandonment trauma (although these situations can also cause you to spin the total opposite direction to and develop addiction in this area). I start out with a type of, "bad news first" technique, hoping to get this part out of the way and move on to how you can help to heal and open this center in a slow and healthy way. This can help you to enjoy life more fully within your body allowing you to experience more of the pleasure that can come through this center and less of the pain.

This energy center acts as a type of pump, directing your energy flow up the spine and is directly associated with your adrenals and excretory system. Knowing this, one can guess how important it is for this center to be functioning properly in your life. Before we go into ways to improve the quality and function of this chakra I would love to point out what someone with a open root chakra might look like.

If you are someone that radiates "presence" when you enter a room, or puts off a type of strong physical potency, you can rest assured your root chakra is in full effect. The key here is to keep a balance within this realm. You don't want the energy center, or any others for that matter, operating on an over powering level either. Stand fully within your connection to life, but also offer room for others to radiate on their individual levels around you. If you know me at all you may know that this is an area I have struggled with in my life. I have had an overpowering connection to life in the past, and a smaller connection to spiritual. It has been a long, hard, and beautiful journey for me and I am grateful for all that learning about my energy centers has done to help me in balancing this area of my life. It is a continuous journey but I celebrate the healing that has come to me and I am passionate about helping others in balancing this and their other chakras.

Here are a few tips and helps that can get you started on your balancing:

If you feel that your root chakra is under active and are feeling disconnected from your body, anxious, have poor focus, financial difficulties, and/or chronic disorganization:

1.) Try beginning a new work out routine. Remember to take it slow, don't over do it but begin something new and physically rejuvenating.

2.) Reconnect- Get out in nature, walk through the grass barefoot. Go on a walk and physically touch the plants and trees around you.

3.) Touch- Schedule a massage (or ask a loved one or friend to give you one).

4.) Try starting a regular yoga practice. You can incorporate any variety of yoga classes- hot, meditative, breath work, vinyasa, ashtanga, etc. A place I found useful for myself and my clients is the Gaia website. It has yoga instruction on every level, amazing instructors, and it can be done in the comfort of your own home.

5.) Energy work- When I am working with clients who struggle in this area I often times am led to examining their relationship with their mother. Energy work is a beautiful and gifted way to heal any past or present hurt between a mother and child.

If you feel that your root chakra is over active and have symptoms of obesity, addiction, over attachment to material things, fear to make changes in your life, and/or have very strict boundaries:

1.) Try to begin adding a meditation practice into your day. Meditation has so many wonderful effects, and one of them is helping you to balance your energy upward.

2.) Start a yoga practice- The key here is to make sure the practice is more of a traditional yoga. No hot yoga classes for you. Find an instructor that helps you to go inward and focus on body and spiritual connection at the same time, fluidly moving you through your practice while keeping this connection. Try kundalini, restorative, or yin yoga. Again, a place I found so useful for myself and my clients is the Gaia website.

3.) Do a spring cleaning in your life. Are there items in your home? On your computer? In your garage or vehicle that are no longer serving you? It's time to clean out and detach.

Now take a deep breath, and let it out making a nice, "ahhhh" sound. Remember, none of us are perfect nor will we ever be in this life. We take it one step at a time, one day at a time. All of the small adjustments we will make are what produce the large change for the better. If you are choosing to work in this area, choose one of the things listed above and experiment on it this week. I encourage you to take notes, or keep a journal. You can also begin by creating or adding to a vision board image or word representing this change that you are implementing in your daily life. Enjoy the beautiful life you were sent here to live and know it is all for your growth, benefit and learning.
